10 Tips to Become a LinkedIn All-Star

If you’re a business professional, you need to learn how to use LinkedIn to build an active network.

The major reasons people are turning to this professional network is it’s a veritable powerhouse of hiring, selling and learning. In fact, recently LinkedIn exceeded 300 million users, with more than 100 million located in the U.S.! People are able to build personal brands, establish themselves as thought leaders and even bring in new leads to a company.

This article is designed to help you get better job opportunities or grow your business. To do this quickly, you should strive to attain all-star status.

Your chances of using LinkedIn for success in your business will multiply by 40 times when you have a complete profile. You’ll have access to new jobs, new markets, clients and connections. This is particularly important because many companies now use LinkedIn for recruiting.

To help you achieve your career and business goals, here are some tips on how to become a LinkedIn all-star. You might also use these tips as a guide on how to get recruited from LinkedIn or how to use LinkedIn to get a job:

1. Add a Professional Profile Photo

LinkedIn is a professional social network, so you can’t just add a photo of your family, pet or cartoon. Your profile will be incomplete if you don’t have a professional photo. One of the best tips on how to make a great LinkedIn profile is to have a photo that’s friendly, approachable and professional.

Ideally, you should be wearing business casual or formal business attire in your photo. The background should have your work environment or be a light color for optimal effect.

3. Provide a Captivating Headline and Summary

Fill up the entire 120 characters allowed with an attention-grabbing headline. To reach LinkedIn all-star status, add areas of expertise to the headline so you can show up in searches.

You should also add:

  • Keywords
  • Location
  • Industry
  • Job title
  • Any other details that can improve your profile

After the headline, the summary is the next thing people will read, so you should:

  • Focus on building your personal profile here
  • Write in paragraph format using the first or third person
  • Use a professional and friendly tone

5. Add Your Work Experience and Skills

You need to add at least three job titles to achieve all-star status. LinkedIn has also made it possible to add media including videos, hyperlinks and pictures. To make the best of this section, you should:

  • Fill in as many job positions as you can
  • Include a full description of each job title you add
  • Add your main skills and accomplishments in each position
  • Provide evidence of completed projects
  • State any awards or achievement certificates you have

7. Include Your Education and Qualifications

In addition to what you wrote in the summary section, you should also add all your educational achievements here. Mention the educational institutions you’ve attended so that alumni can find you.

Also, you should:

  • List all qualifications and awards you’ve received
  • Add qualification acronyms and grades (if you had good ones)
  • Include all degrees
  • If you don’t have a college degree, state the name of your high school

After the education and courses section, list your skills and expertise:

  • List out your specialties and add keywords
  • Add at least five skills — or more until you reach the maximum of 50 that LinkedIn permits. The more you add, the more likely you’ll appear in searches when people are looking for a particular skill.

9. Build Connections

You need at least 50 connections to have a completed profile. So, if you want to know how to make a great Linkedin profile, it’s simple: Build more connections.

It’s quite easy to locate and include people in your network:

  • Upload contacts from Gmail, Outlook or Hotmail
  • Allow LinkedIn to check your email contacts to discover those who have an established LinkedIn profile
  • Browse the profiles of alumni, former colleagues, and co-workers
